Resettlement guidance

Overview of the principles and processes of resettlement from or between homelessness services, covering strategy, procedure and support.

Who should use this guidance?

Local authorities and agencies that support people to move from or between homelessness services.

In brief

Resettlement is the move that a person makes from temporary housing or the streets into more permanent, often independent, accommodation. It is the most common gap in provision for homelessness services, and changes to welfare benefits and housing are increasing this gap. The main guidance contains information for both local authorities and service providers including:

  • How changes to housing and welfare benefits will affect resettlement
  • Resettlement options
  • Planning and preparation
  • Meeting the costs of resettlement
  • Support after resettlement
  • Innovative projects
  • Resources
  • Checklist

A summary guide for local authorities is also available.
