Homeless Link welcomes measures outlined by mayoral candidate in the run up to May’s election.

Zac Goldsmith has published his housing manifesto, which outlines his plans to enable the building of more new homes and to increase the availability of more affordable rental properties. He writes that if elected Mayor on May 5th, he “will take responsibility for solving … the scourge of homelessness.”

As a member of the Lead London Home campaign, Homeless Link is pleased to see a commitment to preventing rough sleeping and to addressing the chronic shortage of accommodation in the capital.

We particularly welcome the commitments to:

  • tackle rough sleeping in the capital
  • expand the No First Night Out pilot scheme to enable a services to identify individuals and work together to prevent them from sleeping rough
  • increase the availability of homes for rent.

Rick Henderson, Chief Executive of Homeless Link, said: “Homelessness and rough sleeping in London have risen exponentially in recent years, so it is reassuring to see another mayoral candidate vowing to tackle the issue. Homelessness is a major challenge for any leader, so we look forward to working closely with the successful candidate to help them keep it a priority throughout their term.”

In the run-up to the election we look forward to engaging with Zac to discuss how he can turn his pledges into reality should he become Mayor.
