Government funding to tackle homelessness should be welcomed

Tuesday, 10 June 2014 - 3:47pm

Today, the Government announced £65m in funding to help tackle homelessness in England.

Responding Rick Henderson, Chief Executive of the umbrella body Homeless Link said:

"Today's news should be welcomed. Demand for help with homelessness remains high, whilst funding for support has been hard hit in recent years. So this extra money could help make a real difference.

"The emphasis on improving the quality of homeless advice and support that councils give is a positive move. All too often homelessness could be stopped if individuals got the right advice to keep their accommodation.

"Investment to tackle youth homelessness is also a good step.  Our research has found that all too many under 25s face homelessness, the majority of who are not in education or employment.

"However, council and charity homeless services have been hard hit by cuts and today's news cannot be seen as a replacement for that funding.  To bring homeless numbers down, services need to continue to rethink how they provide the most effective help possible. But long-term secure funding for prevention and support is also needed."
