Transatlantic Practice Exchange 2017 – are your staff ready for the challenge?
The Exchange gives five frontline practitioners the opportunity to spend two weeks with US organisations. It will be a busy, rewarding fortnight – shadowing staff and visiting services, meeting people who are homeless in the US, and reflecting on their own practice in the UK. They’ll be tweeting and blogging about the experience, as well as writing a report on their chosen topic.
We’re looking for organisations who will support their staff to apply, offer them flexibility to travel, and allow them time to share their learning afterwards. Flights, accommodation and daily expenses are funded thanks to support from the Oak Foundation.
Topics for 2017
Participants can research and propose an original topic with particular relevance to their work, or explore one of five programme areas identified by Homeless Link and the National Alliance to End Homelessness, our counterpart organisation in the US.
This year’s programme areas are:
- Strengths-based case management
- Critical Time Intervention
- Unsheltered homelessness/rough sleeping strategies
- Supporting unaccompanied women experiencing homelessness
- Accessing employment
Successful applicants will have the full support of their organisation to participate and to apply their learning afterwards. It’s a great way to raise the profile of your charity and to benefit from a fresh perspective on your organisation’s work. Homeless Link will help participants to plan their placement, write their report and find opportunities to share learning locally and nationally.
“The exposure to different ways of working and thinking really gave me the knowledge and confidence to challenge and improve what’s already out there. It keeps me motivated to think outside the box” - Dorota, Exchange participant
The Alliance and Homeless Link are also looking for five US participants to learn from good practice in England, and we’ll be matching them with hosts in the new year. US practitioners can apply here.
How to apply
We hope homelessness charities will share this opportunity with their teams, and work with applicants to identify programme areas with a real potential for change.

The deadline for applications is 9am on Monday 19 December, for decisions in January and placements between March and May 2017. Good luck!
