Select Committees

by gailemerson last modified 2006-06-20 03:17 PM

Select Committees are composed of 11 backbench MPs from all major parties. They examine government policy and legislation on a specific issue or in a specific department and publish reports of their findings. To inform their reports they collect written and oral evidence from experts, focusing attention on particular issues through single evidence sessions, informal consultations with experts and external visits to see how things work in practice. The government must respond to all reports they submit.

The Select Committee with responsibility for examining government policy on homelessness is the ODPM/DCLG Departmental Select Committee. You can see a list of the members, browse recent inquiries and reports, as well as see what current inquiries are underway on their website .

What We Do

Homeless Link was asked to give expert evidence in the ODPM Select Committee’s inquiry into Homelessness in the 2004/2005 parliamentary session. We submitted written evidence and our Chief Executive, Jenny Edwards, and Howard Sinclair, a Homeless Link board member, gave oral evidence on behalf of Homeless Link’s members.

See the Committee’s full report gives a full record of all the evidence given and the government response. (NB: Please scroll down to the report on Homelessness in the 2004-5 parliamentary session.)
