Early Day Motions
An Early Day Motion (EDM) can be put forward – sponsored - by any MP on any issue, and is then signed by other MPs who support the motion. They are formally a request for a debate in parliament, although nowadays there is rarely time for such debates. In modern parliament, EDMs serve to raise the profile of an issue within parliament and gain or consolidate the support of MPs.
There have been several EDMs tabled concerning homelessness issues and most have enjoyed considerable support. You can search the EDM online index for the latest motions.
What We Do
Homeless Link’s policy and research reports have inspired EDMs when, informed by our members, they draw attention to previously unrecognised issues.
Most recently, our Move On report informed EDM no 557. This highlighted the problem of people being stuck in, supposedly, short term hostel accommodation with no permanent housing to ‘move on’ to. Sponsored by Karen Buck MP, this EDM has attracted 87 MPs support. The EDM online index shows the full text and signing members .
