From engagement through to employment, this conference will guide you through the spectrum of activities that help homeless people move on with their lives.
Involvement in meaningful activity can equip an individual with the skills, motivation and ‘personal space’ needed to address the problems that have led to their homelessness. They can rebuild self-esteem, personal relationships and quality of life. Informal learning activities can also lead to wide ranging improvements in mental and physical health for homeless people. For others who are more ready to move on, structured training and education courses can help them gain the skills they need to operate in the job market and find sustainable employment.
It is important that all activities are recognised as valid and that outcomes are measured both in terms of personal change (‘soft’ outcomes) and educational and employment successes (‘hard’ outcomes).
The Home Office are supporting Homeless Link with this event as a joined up approach to service delivery and to help improve outcomes for clients.
This conference helps support two core aims of the Government’s latest rough sleeping strategy:
- action 3: we will extend positive activities that motivate and empower people to take greater control in their lives
- action 4: we will tackle worklessness
Homelessness to employment is an opportunity to:
- hear how access to meaningful activities are key to rebuilding self-esteem
- hear how to work with challenging clients including those who might have additional needs to help address their substance misuse and/or offending.
- look at possible ways of offering structured and accredited training courses to clients
- examine the business planning needed to make a social enterprise a success and share ideas of possible models within our social enterprise zone
- find out how to overcome potential barriers to employment
- learn how to coach and mentor soft skills to get clients ready for work
- find out about brokering employment opportunities for service users
- learn how to support CEE clients into work
- network and share ideas.
