Raising the game
The housing association movement has always been crucial in the fight against homelessness. Some of our largest associations started out as local responses to the problem; and for many providing homes for homeless people remains at the heart of their mission.
Now, alongside significant increases in investment in social housing, the Government is looking to all social landlords to deliver more. The Housing Corporation is writing its homelessness strategy, which will help deliver the ODPM’s strategy, Settled Homes; Changing Lives. Their Gold Award scheme, with homelessness as its first theme, shows how the issue is top of the agenda.
All social landlords, specialist and general needs alike, will be expected to contribute – by increasing lettings to homeless people, ensuring vulnerable people get the support they need and by reducing evictions.
This event offered a timely opportunity for staff from housing associations and other RSLs, homeless service providers, local authorities and other partners to come together to explore the developing policy agenda and learn from best practice.
