Joining the dots, 15 May 2008, London

Connecting the evidence base for homelessness policy and practice

Joining the dots offered policy makers and service managers the chance to talk directly to researchers about their findings and understand, through interactive workshops, how they are relevant to their work. Getting to grips with the evidence base helps them provide the best possible services to their customers and allocate resources most effectively. At the same time, researchers had the chance to discuss and share the practical application of their work directly with those who realise change in policy and practice.

Making the extraordinary ordinary, 1 April 2008, London

Employing service users in the homeless sector

The tipping point is almost here. Organisations that are not employing service users are being challenged by their clients, staff, funders and peers, as being behind the times and lacking the will to open up vital employment opportunities. The question for agencies to ask themselves is not Can we afford to do this? but rather Can we afford not to?

A sporting chance: Transforming the lives of homeless people through sport and fitness, 5 December, Sheffield

Giving homeless people an opportunity to participate in sports activities can have a positive impact not only on their health, but also on their confidence and self-esteem. Involvement can promote new social networks, improve communication skills and, for some, encourage their move towards independence.

Young people: telling it straight, 18 October 2007, Birmingham

Young people have a unique perspective to contribute to service improvement and it is critical that they are given the opportunity to do so. This innovative conference from St Basils linked young people who have direct experience of homelessness with frontline agencies and started the process of engagement. This was a fantastic opportunity for individuals and organisations who commission and deliver services relating to youth homelessness to be inspired by what young people have to say about how to create real change and develop preventative services that work.

Journeys home: an end to rough sleeping, 11 & 12 July 2007, Birmingham

Ten years after the Government set the aim to reduce rough sleeping to as close to zero as possible we felt that it was time to take stock, to analyse and celebrate the progress made and to look to the future with new focus and drive. This year’s annual conference focused on ending rough sleeping, bringing together nearly 300 representatives from all of the key stakeholders across the sector.

Housing and drugs: a matter of substance, 24 May 2007, London

Homeless Link and Shelter, with support from the Housing Corporation and DrugScope, presented this one-day national conference which offered a way through the strategic and practical issues related to housing drug users.

Move on: unlocking solutions, 15 March 2007, London

This national conference shared, for the first time, findings from the Move On Plans Protocol (MOPP) pilot. Supported by Communities and Local Government, the pilot tested how a new partnership approach between local authorities and providers could identify and overcome barriers, and significantly increase rates of move on. The pilot developed audit and planning tools and identified practical approaches that could overcome a wide range of barriers.
