Homeless Link Events

Rt Hon Margaret Hodge, MBE, meets Jan from Streetshine
Homeless Link has a growing programme of national conferences and regional seminars that address the latest topics of interest in the homeless sector and tackle the governments' agenda in relation to homelessness. Previous themes covered have included: anti-social behaviour, prevention, risk, staff development and quality of life.
We recognise that homelessness is not an issue in isolation and aim to work with partners in the voluntary sector to run events with draw together staff from across the sector. Our conference partners have come from many different fields including the drugs and the criminal justice sectors.

Local Solutions: National Impact
Homeless Link Annual Conference 2008
This flagship event in the Homeless Link conference calendar is essential for anyone interested in ending homelessness through social cohesion and community engagement. The conference will focus on the community agenda and on ensuring that everyone in society, even those who are the most vulnerable and with the most complex needs, has an opportunity to play a significant role in the improvement of local communities.
Delegates will hear about current government thinking on empowering citizens, building strong communities and the importance of this for homeless people and the homelessness sector. Good practice workshops will include examples of how to effectively link up and access local services and how homeless people can play an active part in the development of their communities.
Featuring
- debate and interaction with senior government officials

Multiple exclusion Homelessness - improving the evidence base together, 25 June 2008, Crisis Skylight, London
10.00am - 13.30pm
Multiple exclusion Homelessness - a new research initiative
Following a proposal from the Homeless Link Research Forum, a groundbreaking new research initiative under the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) has been launched in partnership with the Housing Corporation, Joseph Rowntree Foundation, Communities and Local Government, the Department of Health and Homeless Link (representing the voluntary sector).
The £680,000 fund available will focus on improving the evidence base around ‘multiple exclusion homelessness’ and is open to proposals from June 2008. Although all projects must have an academic lead there is a strong emphasis on involving the voluntary sector and people with experience of multiple exclusion homelessness in research proposals. Innovative new approaches and proposals from areas of academia that has not traditionally been associated with this area of work are also welcomed.
Launch event - 25 June
We are very keen to promote and support joint working between the voluntary sector and academia, but recognise that existing partnerships to take this work forward may not yet be in place. We are therefore holding a networking launch event on 25 June in London to allow representatives from the two sectors to meet and discuss how they can work jointly on research under this initiative.
This half-day event will be an excellent opportunity to meet potential new partners and develop ideas around new approaches to multiple exclusion and homelessness related research. We are especially keen to see representatives from fields of academia that have not previously been associated with research into multiple exclusion homelessness at the event.
The event is free but places are strictly limited. If you would like to attend please contact Esther Sample at Homeless Link - esther.sample@homelesslink.org.uk or by phone: 020 7960 3076.

Joining the dots, 15 May 2008, London
Connecting the evidence base for homelessness policy and practice
One-day research conference
This conference provided a rare opportunity to pull together some of the exciting, new research that has been conducted into homelessness and related fields in recent years.
Joining the dots offered policy makers and service managers the chance to talk directly to researchers about their findings and understand, through interactive workshops, how they are relevant to their work. Getting to grips with the evidence base helps them provide the best possible services to their customers and allocate resources most effectively.
At the same time, researchers had the chance to discuss and share the practical application of their work directly with those who realise change in policy and practice.
Making the extraordinary ordinary, 1 April 2008, London
Employing service users in the homelessnes sector
Employing people with a personal experience of homelessness can bring a whole new dimension and vital improvements to an organisation’s reputation, financial situation, service delivery, as well as numerous benefits to the service user employee.
This event informed working practices to encourage the employment of homeless people within the homelessness sector. It explored the benefits of service user employment as well as possible barriers and solutions, backed up by existing models of good practice.
It was an event that helped shape the future of service delivery in the homelessness sector by using the first-hand expertise, knowledge and enthusiasm of people who have themselves experienced homelessness.
Homelessness ICT Connections
Information Communication Technology (ICT) has the ability to transform the ways in which homelessness staff work and to raise service user skills to positively change lives. ICT can be effective, specific to your needs and simple, and these events will help your organisation in finding what ICT can do for you.
