Some news from agencies in the South West

Shekinah Mission held an event in the House of Commons in July to raise the issue of the 16 hour rule, and its negative impact on people trying to re-build their lives. The event was well attended by agencies, both from the South West and London, who wanted MPs to realise the need for flexible provision and benefit reform that better meets the needs of the socially excluded.

In September Bristol held a second event on Embedding Employment and Training in provision. The event was supported by Bristol Council and run jointly with Off the Streets and Into Work and Homeless Link. Agencies have signed up to an action plan to work in partnership to raise the profile of, and engagement in, employment and training across Bristol services.

In October The Salvation Army in Devonport, Plymouth, hosted a visited from MP Alison Seabeck which was a great success in demonstrating the positive impact on service from Supporting People, but also raised awareness of the need for meaningful occupation to be funded. Homeless Link are calling for SP Plus to enable sustainable funding of such valuable activities.

The Meaningful Occupation Project in Exeter re-opened it’s doors after a short closure with new activities, focus and a new application process. For information on the new prospectus contact Marc@exetermop.co.uk

The BBC have launched a series of programmes as part of the ‘Cathy Come Home’ anniversary part of which includes a call for people to volunteer in agencies: · people wanting to volunteer with a homeless agency they should visit: The BBC website http://www.bbc.co.uk/nohome/ and click "get involved now" · agencies wanting to get a vacancy added so it appears on do-it and the BBC's site they should speak to their local volunteering centre in the first instance, details from: http://www.volunteering.org.uk/Local+and+Regional/findoutaboutvolunteeringinyourarea.htm
