The Mayor's Health Inequalities Strategy

by gailemerson last modified 2008-02-06 05:14 PM

The Mayor of London is developing a Health Inequalities Strategy. This will look at physical and mental health inequalities in the capital and how they can be reduced through influencing individuals' choices, around healthy eating for example, and through tackling structural factors which affect health, such as housing. Homeless Link is working to ensure the health inequalities of Londoners directly experiencing homelessness are addressed in the strategy.

The Mayor's Health Inequalities Strategy is currently in development.

Background

Since the Mayor of London’s inception in 1999 he has had a duty to 'promote improvements in the health of Londoners'. The GLA Bill (expected to become law in Autumn 2007) gives the Mayor further responsibilities around health, including developing a Health Inequalities Strategy.

The GLA's Health team, responsible for drafting the Mayor's Health Inequalities Strategy, presented at our Spotlight on Health and Homelessness in June 2007.

Homeless Link submitted evidence regarding homelessness and health to the GLA's call for evidence on health inequalities in April 2007. The results of the call for evidence together with other research commissioned by the GLA Health team fed into the Reducing Health Inequalities consultation paper.

Reducing Health Inequalities - issues for London & options for action

In August 2007, the Mayor published an initial consultation paper - Reducing Health Inequalities - issues for London & options for action - and invited responses to this paper until September 2007. This consultation will influence the development of the draft Health Inequalities Strategy.
