An update on the Association of London Government
Cllr Merrick Cockell has been elected Chairman of the Association of London Government (ALG) at the annual general meeting of its Leaders’ Committee.
It is the first time that a Conservative has been elected as Chairman of the ALG, which represents all of London’s 32 boroughs and the City of London, since the Association was established in 2000
Cllr Cockell welcomed the cross-party commitment to working within the ALG and has promised to visit all London councils over the coming year to identify local concerns and priorities. 'I want the ALG to have a distinct voice on matters where boroughs and those we represent are involved. To achieve this ALG will have to become more focused on fewer matters and those will have to be the ones that matter most to Londoners.'
The AGM also elected Cllr Stephen Carr, the leader of Bromley Council as the ALG’s Deputy Chairman. Mayor Steve Bullock (Lewisham), Cllr Sean Brennan (Sutton) and Michael Snyder (City of London) were named as the ALG’s three Vice Chairs
Following the London local elections on the 4th May this year, no single party has a majority on the Association’s Leaders’ Committee, with 16 Conservative members, nine Labour, seven Liberal Democrats and the independent from the City of London
