Course spotlights

Managing conflict, violence & aggressive situations (coming soon)

9 April 2008, London

This course provides practical, realistic advice and techniques for frontline workers who face verbal abuse, threats and aggression from service users. It uses realistic role play scenarios and deals both with pre-emptive strategies and positive action that can be taken when an incident is taking place, using the unique CLEAR way.

Mental health & homelessness

11 April 2008, London

Workers often interact with extremely vulnerable people with a wide range of mental health needs. They may feel uncertain and even frightened about how to deal safely and effectively with such clients. This very practical course addresses some of these challenges by increasing workers' knowledge and building skills for working with homeless clients who have mental health issues.

Welfare benefits overview

18 April 2008, London

Help with claiming benefits is one of the most important services that housing and homelessness agencies can provide - especially as many homeless and poorly-housed people, confused by the bureaucracy or defeated by all the regulations, do not receive their full entitlement. This course will provide participants with an excellent introduction to the system, and a practical guide to claiming the most important benefits.

Working with suicidal & self-harming clients

28 & 29 April 2008, London

This course is designed to give an insight into clients suffering from suicidal ideation, or who may have problems with self-injury. Bear in mind that these are symptoms of underlying problems, and so it is the person and not the self-harm that should be focussed on. Course features include identifying risk factors, vulnerable groups, alternatives to self-harm, helpful & unhelpful responses and characteristics of suicidal people.

New in-house courses

As well as Introduction to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy: principles & practice and Engage & empower: raising clients' confidence, motivation and communication skills, Homeless Link now offers a new course running solely in-house. In partnership with Streetwise Opera, Running arts programmes with measurable outcomes investigates the practicalities of setting up an arts project, including demystifying the arts in homeless centres, how to get clients and artists on board, fundraising, project goals and how to formalis existing art projects. Described by Gordon Brown as "one of the most innovative charities of the decade", Streetwise Opera draw on years of experience running arts programmes in homeless centres, and hope to teach you how to do the same.
