Resettlement

by chrisames last modified 2009-03-04 02:39 PM

These pages contain information and resources about resettling homeless people, particularly single homeless people. Resettlement is the process by which homeless people are helped to live independently. A broad definition of resettlement covers everything that agencies working with homeless people do from their first engagement with them. These pages will cover a narrower idea of resettlement; the work that agencies do with homeless people with the specific intention of equipping them for independent living.

The Issues

Resettlement is a key homelessness service and a key part of ending homelessness. Most homeless people aspire to live independently but for many homeless people, resettlement is about far more than getting a permanent roof over their head. Successful resettlement is about helping people to move somewhere that they will feel happy and able to stay, with appropriate support, social networks and lifeskills. Successful resettlement is about preventing repeat homelessness and is therefore a key homelessness prevention issue.

Pre-tenancy training

Pre-tenancy training can be essential for many people making the transition to independent living and is closely associated with lifeskills training.

It’s Your Move is a nationwide project developed by Broadway. It works in partnership with a range of voluntary and statutory organisations to develop pre-tenancy training programmes and resources.

Further resources

  • Broadway has developed an It's your own home handbook, "a practical, user-friendly guide for people moving into their own independent accommodation." There are sections on all stages of the rehousing process, from receiving an offer to settling in.
  • Daily Living Skills is an outcome-based programme relevant to floating support and accommodation based housing related support providers.
