Research and Publications
Some of the most important work that needs to be done in securing sustainable funding for day centres is in demonstrating the value of their services. The documents in this section can be useful in learning more about the work that day centres do and why it is so important.
Day Centres Service Provision
Survey of Needs and Provision (SNaP)
Homeless Link and the Resource Information Service (RIS) have jointly developed new research that maps the sector providing services to single people or couples who are homeless in England. The research includes specific information about day centre services accross England, ranging from the average number of day centre users by region to funding information. The report will help you to get an idea of what you have in common with other day centres and where yours might be different. Visit the SNaP pages for more information, or download the full report here.
RIS Day Centre Directory Analysis
RIS published Day Centres for Homeless People in the UK: An Analysis of Provision from the Day Centres Directory in March 2007 a study of day centre service provision in the UK that presents key findings about day centre use, activities and geographical distribution. This provides a good UK overview to complement the more recent SNaP research on England only.
Crisis Research on Daytime Homelessness
In April 2005, Crisis and the University of York Centre for Housing Policy published a report called Daytime Homelessness which examined literature, case studies and interviews exploring the concept of daytime homelessness. The report is useful as it begins to document the need for service provision during the daytime, and thus the important gap in homelessness services that day centres strive to fill. It also looks into the advantages to vulnerable people of the holistic approach taken by day centres in providing many different services in one place.
